Life after instagram and advice for young artist

Instagram as always been affecting the art world and I think it always will. I don’t think there will be another platform but Instagram will add more to it and making sure it is up to date with whats going on in the world at that time. Instagram is a good way to get your art work out there and I think in the future it will be more advance to where your work can get around the world much easier than it does now and even maybe there may be an art platform, where it’s an instagram just for artists. Technology has taken over this generation and it will get worse. Kids don’t go play outside anymore; they sit on their iPads, phones, xboxes, etc. All they look at is screens and they don’t let their mind go further than the screens. My advice to young artist is:

1.) Go out and look for inspiration, Don’t just look for it on your screens. Adventure into the outdoors and look at things around you.

2.) You are going to get rejected and hear things you don’t want to hear about your work but know thats how you grow as an artist. Don’t take it so harshly like you do if someone tears you down on social media. Use the rejection and comments as motivation.

3.) Don’t give up even if you feel like you have no know idea what you are doing.

4.) Make art work about what you love and whats important to you so you can actually enjoy making it instead of dreading it.

5.) My finally advice is, trends will always be there. You see them all over social media but don’t follow them. Be different and go further than what that trend is on social media.

Procrastination happens when i'm in a creative rut.

As an artist and a student I procrastinate a lot. The way I distract myself is by making plans and seeing friends, watching movies, shopping for things, eating food. I will do anything to distract myself sometimes. The 2 most popular things I use to distract myself is watching movies/ TV shows and also being on my phone. Just to get back on track, i will notice how much I need to get done and I will lock myself in my basement with soft music playing in the background and phone away with the TV off. I won’t come out till I have most of my things finished. It’s hard though because when I’m rut or an artist block I watch movies for inspiration as well. I love directing and telling a story, so movies obviously help me with that. I also go on long drives when I’m in artist block for new places to shoot at or if something catches my eye that I can base my work around I will use that as well.

This article down below talks about how today everyone watches movies to escape the world that they live in and I would say I do a lot because I love the way movies make me feel.

Right now to distract myself I’m watching criminal minds, if you haven’t watched it, please do. It really does make you feel every emotion, some of the episodes are scary because some of them could actually happen, but overall this show makes me procrastinate.

How I Become an Artist; Q and A with Sidney

Q: When did you know you wanted to go to school for photography? A: I never knew I wanted my career or even going to college for photography till I was in my first semester of college. I always have had a love for it in high school, so I wanted to expand that knowledge by learning everything about this way of art.

Q: Have you always loved taking photos? A: I didn’t start taking a lot of pictures till I was in High school on a real DSLR camera. After learning some things early on in High School, I found a love for it and it has been growing ever since.

Q: Does your life represent your work and who you are? A: Yes it does, my work represents who I am and the struggles that I have faced growing up. My work also represents what I believe in and Other interests in my life.

Q: What struggles do your face as an artist? A: I struggle with getting my work out in the world. Also struggle with not getting sucked into the trends on social media and the way artist are portraying photos with the Hipster looked, blown out backgrounds, lots of cool colors, etc.

Q: Whats your favorite thing as an artist? A: My favorite thing is meeting new people and finding opportunities to find new relationships.

Q: What have you learned as an artist? A: Honestly I have learned a ton of information on technical skills and even about my camera. One thing though I have never been good at it but am more prepared for now is rejection by other people. In this word there will be people who don’t like your work and during this course of life, I have learned about that.

Q: If you could collaborate with any other artist, who would it be and why? A: The artist I would choose is Jesse Burke. He bases all his work on family and nature. I would choose him because being outdoors is my favorite thing and i also care so much for my family and each of our relationships.

Q: whats one thing in your Art backpack that you can’t live without? A: Besides my camera, it would be my hard drive. Everything is on it, so if I don’t have it well then I don’t have my work.

Q: Where is your dream location to shoot photography? A: My dream is to shoot for Walt Disney world. To work up in the company and to be known as a disney photographer.

Q: If you pursued any other art or career, what would you choose? A: I Honestly don’t know, probably something with business just because my whole family is involved in a business type job involving marketing or even H.R.

Trends affect us always!

The world around us is always changing due to trends; Styles, the way we talk, music, dancing, social media, etc. Since the world is affected by trends, the art world is also changing. Which in some cases it can be good but also can hurt the artist.

For me as an artist, I like to base my work about self-image and what social media tells us females who to be and not to be. It has always been a big topic talked about on the internet and throughout social media. A trend that I notice when scrolling throughout my instagram is more photographs of pregnant women as models and girls who are “heavier” than your regular Victoria Secrete model.

When looking at these photographs, you can tell that they feel beautiful and it shows they are comfortable in their own skin. Another thing about these photos is the edits or filters being used, they are bright and have that “hipster look”. For me as an artist I like to capture the darkness of self image, by showing girls fixing themselves and caring so much about what the internet tells them. With these trends that are happening, it is hard because they aren’t happy images, they are uncomfortable.

With these certain trends though, it has made me look at my work more and what I can do to keep up with the certain things I see including the edits and filters. Throughout time I have changed the way I portray self-image just because the internet and the world is always changing.

Even if I delete social media, it is still going to change. The filters will change, the way women portray themselves, and the styles also affects that as well. If a women doesn’t dress in that certain trend at the time even if it is just shoes or what not, they feel like an outcast.

Trends always affect an artist, even if you try to ignore it. Its good to keep up with trends but its also okay to keep some of your style into your work to be different and to make your work stand out than the other normal things social media users usually see.
